Golf in South Africa

Some of the best golf in the southern hemisphere: championship courses on the Garden Route, among the vines of the Winelands, on the clifftops above the Indian Ocean, and at Sun City beside the Big Five.

South Africa has produced Gary Player, Ernie Els and generations of champions, and its best courses have hosted the Presidents Cup, the SA Open and the Nedbank Golf Challenge. Many of them welcome visitors; a few can only be played as part of a stay, and we plan around that.

Good to know

When to go
Golf is played all year. The Western Cape gets its rain in winter, from May to August, so the Cape is best from September to April. On the Highveld (Johannesburg and Sun City) summer brings late-afternoon storms from October to April: tee off early. The Garden Route is mild all year.
Handicaps
Many clubs ask for a handicap certificate, including Durban Country Club and Arabella, and St Francis Links has a maximum. Bring yours.
Caddies and carts
Caddies are compulsory at The Links at Fancourt, and Gary Player Country Club is walking only, with caddies. Carts are compulsory at Pinnacle Point. Elsewhere you can usually choose.
Dress
Collared shirts tucked in; no T-shirts or denim on the course.
Golf and safari
Sun City sits next to Pilanesberg, a malaria-free Big Five reserve, and Leopard Creek borders the Kruger National Park.
Getting there
There are direct flights from London Heathrow to Cape Town (about 12 hours) and to Johannesburg (about 11 hours). South Africa is 1 hour ahead of the UK in summer and 2 hours ahead in winter, so there is little jet lag.
Johannesburg to Cape Town is about 2 hours by air.
International flights are not included: you book your own and we plan the trip around them.
Entry: British passport holders
What you need to enter South Africa.
  • South Africa: no visa needed for tourism for up to 90 days. Your passport must be valid for at least 30 days after the day you leave, and have at least 2 blank pages.
