South Africa Golf, Wine and Safari

Cape Town and Robben Island, four nights among the vines in Stellenbosch, then the Kruger and a round at Leopard Creek: five rounds, and as much wine as golf.

12 days
Sample length · 11 nights
5 rounds
Cape Town, Winelands, Kruger
Big Five
Three nights in the Kruger
September to April
Best for the Cape

Why this trip

For golfers who like their wine: four rounds around Cape Town and the Winelands, a guided day on the estates of Franschhoek and Stellenbosch, and a stay on a historic wine estate.

Then north to the Kruger for the Big Five, and a last round at Leopard Creek.

The courses

Steenberg

Steenberg

Peter Matkovich · Constantia, Cape Town

A parkland course among the vineyards of Steenberg, the oldest wine farm on the Cape Peninsula (settled in 1682), about 20 km south of the city.

Clovelly

Clovelly

Silvermine valley, near Fish Hoek

A shorter course that rewards accuracy, in a sheltered valley a few minutes from False Bay.

Erinvale

Erinvale

Gary Player · Somerset West

A Gary Player course below the Helderberg, opened in 1995 and host of the 1996 World Cup of Golf. A flat front nine with water in play, then a back nine up the slopes with views over False Bay.

De Zalze

De Zalze

Peter Matkovich · Stellenbosch

A parkland course on the De Zalze Winelands estate on the edge of Stellenbosch, with water in play and the oak-lined Blaauwklippen River running through it.

Leopard Creek

Leopard Creek

Gary Player · on the Kruger border

A Gary Player course beside the Kruger National Park. The green of the 13th, its signature par 5, looks over the Crocodile River, where hippos and crocodiles roam. Played as part of a stay at one of its partner lodges.

Good to know

When to go

Golf is played all year, but the Western Cape gets its rain from May to August, so September to April is best for this trip. The Garden Route is mild all year.

Getting there

There are direct flights from London Heathrow to Cape Town (about 12 hours) and to Johannesburg (about 11 hours). South Africa is 1 hour ahead of the UK in summer and 2 hours ahead in winter, so there is little jet lag.

Entry

British passport holders need no visa for a holiday of up to 90 days. Your passport must be valid for at least 30 days after you leave and have at least 2 blank pages. Check the GOV.UK travel advice before you travel.

Handicaps

Many clubs ask for a handicap certificate. Bring yours.

Dress

Collared shirts tucked in; no T-shirts or denim on the course.

Malaria

The Kruger is a malaria area. Ask your GP or a travel clinic about tablets before you go.

Add to any trip

Every trip can be extended before or after the golf:

Victoria Falls

The falls on the Zambezi, a short flight from Johannesburg or Cape Town.

Rovos Rail

A luxury train journey across southern Africa.

Mauritius

A week on the beach, with golf too: a flight from Johannesburg.

East Africa

A safari in Kenya or a gorilla trek in Rwanda.

The cricket

A Test at Newlands or the Wanderers, built into the same trip.

Groups and societies

From two golfers to a whole society. Tell us your numbers and we plan the trip around them. Non-golfing partners are welcome: we plan their days too.
