Why this trip

It has a bit of everything South Africa does best: Cape Town and Table Mountain, the wine estates of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, the golf at Fancourt on the Garden Route, and a safari to finish.

The pace is easy, with days off the course for the sights, the wine and the food.

The courses

One of Fancourt's two championship parkland courses, on an estate sheltered by the Outeniqua Mountains.

Outeniqua

Fancourt's other parkland course, a Gary Player design with the Outeniqua Mountains behind it. Not open to outside visitors, so it is rarely busy.

The Links at Fancourt

Pinnacle Point

Pinnacle Point

Peter Matkovich · Mossel Bay

Clifftop holes above the Indian Ocean, with the sea in view from almost every tee. Carts are compulsory.

Good to know

When to go

Golf is played all year, but the Western Cape gets its rain from May to August, so September to April is best for this trip. The Garden Route is mild all year.

Getting there

There are direct flights from London Heathrow to Cape Town (about 12 hours) and to Johannesburg (about 11 hours). South Africa is 1 hour ahead of the UK in summer and 2 hours ahead in winter, so there is little jet lag.

Entry

British passport holders need no visa for a holiday of up to 90 days. Your passport must be valid for at least 30 days after you leave and have at least 2 blank pages. Check the GOV.UK travel advice before you travel.

Handicaps

Many clubs ask for a handicap certificate. Bring yours.

Dress

Collared shirts tucked in; no T-shirts or denim on the course.

Add to any trip

Every trip can be extended before or after the golf:

Victoria Falls

The falls on the Zambezi, a short flight from Johannesburg or Cape Town.

Rovos Rail

A luxury train journey across southern Africa.

Mauritius

A week on the beach, with golf too: a flight from Johannesburg.

East Africa

A safari in Kenya or a gorilla trek in Rwanda.

The cricket

A Test at Newlands or the Wanderers, built into the same trip.

Groups and societies

From two golfers to a whole society. Tell us your numbers and we plan the trip around them. Non-golfing partners are welcome: we plan their days too.
