Polo in Argentina
Argentina is the home of the world's best polo. Every year from September to December the Triple Crown brings the best teams in the game to Buenos Aires, finishing with the Argentine Open final at Palermo in December.
No country plays polo like Argentina. The best players in the world are Argentine, the best ponies are bred on its estancias, and the season's three great opens, known together as the Triple Crown, are the most important tournaments in the sport.
Watching a match at Palermo, with the crowd packed into the stands of the Campo Argentino de Polo, is one of the great days out in world sport. Around it you have Buenos Aires: steak, wine, tango and a city that stays up late.
We build the trip around the matches you want to see, with hotels and transfers arranged by our team on the ground. Tickets for the opens are arranged for you, subject to availability.

The Triple Crown
Three opens, one after another, from September to December, all in and around Buenos Aires. The first two change order from year to year; the Argentine Open at Palermo always comes last, with its final in December. The 2027 dates are announced by the Argentine Polo Association, usually around the middle of the year, and we add them here as soon as they are out.
Played at the Hurlingham Club, founded in 1888 and modelled on the Hurlingham Club in London, then the governing body of polo.
The venue
The Hurlingham Club, in the town of Hurlingham, west of Buenos Aires. It was founded in 1888, modelled on the Hurlingham Club in London, and its clubhouse opened in 1894. Polo, golf, cricket and rugby are all still played there.
When
September to October. In 2026 it ran from 22 September to 4 October, as the first of the three opens. The 2027 dates are to be confirmed.
The history
First played in 1893; the 2026 edition was the 133rd. Lewis Lacey, Argentina's first 10-goal player, was the son of William Lacey, who built much of the club.
The final
Played at the club itself. In 2026 the final was due on Saturday 3 October and was played on Sunday 4 October, moved a day for rain.
Watching it
Top-level polo at a historic club ground outside the city, before the season moves on towards Palermo. Tickets are arranged for you, subject to availability.
The youngest of the three opens, played at one of the best-known country clubs in Argentina.
The venue
Tortugas Country Club, at Manuel Alberti in the Pilar district, north of Buenos Aires. The club opened in 1930.
When
October to November. In 2026 it ran from 6 October to 7 November. The 2027 dates are to be confirmed.
The history
The youngest of the three opens; the 2026 edition was the 86th. The winners receive the Copa Emilio de Anchorena, a trophy first presented in 1907 by the River Plate Polo Association, the forerunner of the Argentine Polo Association.
The final
Played at Tortugas. In 2026 the final was on Saturday 7 November.
Watching it
Top-level polo at a country club north of the city, between Hurlingham and Palermo. Tickets are arranged for you, subject to availability.
The most important tournament in polo, finishing at Palermo in December, in the city itself.
The venue
The Campo Argentino de Polo, in the Palermo district of Buenos Aires on Avenida del Libertador. It opened on 27 October 1928, has two polo fields, seats around 15,000 people and is known as the cathedral of polo. It also hosted the 1978 Hockey World Cup.
When
November to December, after the Hurlingham and Tortugas Opens. In 2026 it runs from 10 November to 12 December. The 2027 dates are to be confirmed.
The history
First played in 1893 as the championship of the Polo Association of the River Plate, and renamed the Argentine Open in the 1920s; the 2026 edition was the 133rd. Teams can be rated up to 40 goals: four players at the maximum handicap of 10. Coronel Suárez has won it more times than anyone, with 25 titles.
The final
Played at Palermo in December, as the last match of the Triple Crown. In 2026 the final is planned for Saturday 12 December. Rain can move it by a day or two.
Watching it
A full stadium in the middle of the city, for the biggest day of the polo year. Tickets are arranged for you, subject to availability.
Where you stay in Buenos Aires
We usually stay in Recoleta, in one of these four. They are all well placed for a quick exit north to the polo and the golf, which are 60 to 90 minutes out of the city, and the domestic airport is 15 minutes away, where our guides look after the paperwork.
Hotels we often use, or similar, subject to availability.
