Why South Africa

"South Africa has been my cricketing home for over 17 years. I've watched Test matches at the Wanderers in 40-degree heat, celebrated New Year at Newlands with Table Mountain behind the bowler's arm, and driven the Garden Route between series. There is no better place on earth for a cricket tour." Ian Kerr, founder

Newlands, Cape Town. The New Year Test.

The grounds

Johannesburg · The Wanderers
Known as the Bullring for its atmosphere: capacity 34,000, a pitch with pace and bounce, and every seat close to the action. Base yourself in Sandton, the safe and walkable heart of the city, 15 to 20 minutes from the ground.
Hotels we recommend, or similar, subject to availability: DaVinci Hotel & Suites and The Michelangelo on Nelson Mandela Square; Garden Court Sandton City; Faircity Quatermain in Morningside.
OR Tambo airport is 45 to 50 minutes from Sandton, more at rush hour.
Centurion · SuperSport Park
The Boxing Day Test: a modern, intimate ground with grass banks and a relaxed, festive, picnic-style atmosphere. Capacity is around 22,000, and England fans traditionally set up on the banks.
Hotel we recommend, or similar, subject to availability: the Centurion Lake Hotel, next to Centurion Mall and 5 minutes by car from the ground.
OR Tambo airport is 30 to 35 minutes by road.
Cape Town · Newlands
The New Year Test, and arguably the most beautiful ground in the world: Table Mountain behind the Kelvin Grove End, oak trees and Devil's Peak. Capacity is about 25,000 and it sells out for England.
Hotels we recommend, or similar, subject to availability: The Vineyard Hotel in Newlands, where touring teams have long stayed, less than a mile from the ground; The Commodore and The Cullinan near the V&A Waterfront; SunSquare Cape Town Gardens in the city centre.
The airport is 20 to 25 minutes from Newlands and 25 to 30 minutes from the Waterfront.
Paarl · Boland Park
The 1st ODI, in the heart of the Cape Winelands, 45 minutes from Cape Town. Many guests make a day of it with a wine tasting.
For a night in the Winelands: Babylonstoren, Grande Provence and Leeu Estates.
Bloemfontein · Mangaung Oval
The 2nd and 3rd ODIs, in the City of Roses, the judicial capital in the heart of the Free State: a compact, friendly ground and a classic, unhurried day of cricket.

Add to any trip

Kruger National Park
The Big Five. About an hour by air from Johannesburg, or 5 to 6 hours by road. Allow 2 to 3 nights. Best before or after the Highveld Tests.
Victoria Falls
A short flight from Johannesburg. Allow at least 2 nights: helicopter flights over the falls, sunset cruises and rafting on the Zambezi.
The Garden Route
One of the great road trips: Wilderness, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay. Allow 3 to 5 days, best after the Cape Town Test.
Cape Town days
Nine guided days around the Newlands Test, from Cape Point to a helicopter flight.

Good to know

The weather
December and January are high summer: 26 to 34°C on the Highveld (Johannesburg, Centurion), with afternoon storms that usually clear within an hour, and 22 to 28°C in Cape Town with a steady south-easterly breeze. Bring a hat and SPF 50+.
Getting there
There are direct flights from London Heathrow to Cape Town (about 12 hours) and to Johannesburg (about 11 hours). South Africa is 1 hour ahead of the UK in summer and 2 hours ahead in winter, so there is little jet lag.
Johannesburg to Cape Town is about 2 hours by air.
International flights are not included: you book your own and we plan the trip around them.
Entry: British passport holders
What you need to enter South Africa.
  • South Africa: no visa needed for tourism for up to 90 days. Your passport must be valid for at least 30 days after the day you leave, and have at least 2 blank pages.
