Destination Guide
Introduction — by Ian Kerr
There is nothing in world cricket quite like a tour of the West Indies. The combination of island-hopping, turquoise seas, calypso music drifting from the stands, and Test cricket played under Caribbean skies makes it the most intoxicating experience in the game.
Every island has its own character. Barbados is polished and welcoming, with Kensington Oval as its beating heart. Antigua is laid-back, with 365 beaches and a cricket ground named after the greatest batsman to ever walk out of the Caribbean. Jamaica is raw and passionate — Sabina Park beneath the Blue Mountains is unforgettable. Trinidad brings energy, street food, and carnival culture. St Lucia offers the most dramatic natural scenery you'll find anywhere in the cricket world.
This guide is built from years of Caribbean travel experience — every hotel recommended, every island explored, every rum punch tested. It's the guide I wish I'd had on my first Caribbean cricket trip, and it's updated before every tour.
General Travel Notes
Entry Requirements
UK passport holders do not need visas for short stays across most Caribbean islands including Barbados, Antigua, Jamaica, Trinidad, St Lucia, and Grenada. Your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond your intended departure date. Check gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice for specific island requirements before you travel.
Currency
The Eastern Caribbean Dollar (XCD) is used in Antigua, St Lucia, Grenada, and St Kitts. Barbados uses the Barbados Dollar (BBD), Jamaica uses the Jamaican Dollar (JMD), and Trinidad uses the Trinidad and Tobago Dollar (TTD). US Dollars are widely accepted across all islands. Credit cards are accepted at most hotels and restaurants. We recommend carrying some local currency for smaller establishments and tips.
Weather
Expect temperatures between 26–31°C year-round. England typically tour January to March, which falls in the dry season (December to May). Occasional tropical showers are common but usually brief. Pack light, breathable clothing, strong sunscreen (SPF 50+), and a decent hat. A light rain jacket is useful for the odd shower.
Getting Around
Inter-island flights are the primary mode of travel between venues. Caribbean Airlines and regional carriers operate frequent services. Flight times are typically 30 minutes to 2 hours between islands. Ground transfers on each island are usually 20–45 minutes from airport to hotel. All inter-island flights and ground transfers are arranged as part of our packages.
Time Zone
The Caribbean operates on Atlantic Standard Time (AST), which is GMT-4. There is no daylight saving time, so the time difference from the UK is 4 hours behind in winter and 5 hours behind in summer.
Health
No mandatory vaccinations are required for entry from the UK. Mosquito repellent is recommended, particularly in the evenings. Bottled water is widely available. Consult your GP or a travel health clinic at least 6 weeks before departure for the latest advice.
Mobile Phones
Check with your UK provider about international roaming packages before departure — roaming charges can vary significantly between islands. Alternatively, purchase a local SIM card on arrival at each island. Wi-Fi is available at most hotels and many restaurants. Coverage varies by island — Barbados and Trinidad have the most reliable networks.
Barbados — Kensington Oval
Barbados is the spiritual home of Caribbean cricket. Kensington Oval in Bridgetown is one of the great cricket grounds of the world, and the island itself offers an unbeatable combination of beaches, culture, food, and rum.
Kensington Oval
Capacity approximately 28,000. The region's first Test was played here in 1930, and the ground has been at the heart of West Indian cricket ever since. The iconic Gary Sobers statue greets you at the entrance. The ground underwent a major redevelopment for the 2007 Cricket World Cup, modernising the facilities while retaining its Caribbean character. The atmosphere on a Test match day here is unforgettable — calypso music, rum punch, and passionate local support.
