Rugby here runs from the schools, where many Springboks first made their name, through the university game, where the Varsity Cup has produced 61 Springboks, to the club leagues and the Springboks themselves at Ellis Park, Loftus Versfeld and Kings Park.

Touring sides come to play, to learn and to take in the country between matches. Tell us who you are and what you want from the tour, and we build it around your group.

University rugby

The Varsity Cup runs from mid February to mid April. The 2026 competition had eight sides, including UP Tuks (champions for a record sixth time), Maties, UCT Ikey Tigers, UFS Shimlas, NWU Eagles and UJ. 61 former Varsity Cup and Shield players have gone on to play for the Springboks.

For a university side, February to April is the time to come, when the South African students are in season.

The Springboks at home

The Springboks host Australia twice in the 2027 Rugby Championship, before the Rugby World Cup in Australia (1 October to 13 November 2027). Dates and venues are still to be announced; we add them here as soon as they are out.

Good to know

When to go
University sides are in season from mid February to mid April, and the club leagues run from about April to August. From September clubs are into their playoffs. Tell us your dates and we match your fixtures to the calendar.
Fixtures
Arranged by our team on the ground against local sides of the right age and standard, subject to availability.
Altitude
Johannesburg is at 1,753 m and Pretoria at about 1,339 m. Visiting sides feel it, above all in the first 20 minutes: build in a day or two to adjust before your first match on the Highveld.
The weather
The South African winter is the rugby season. Cape Town is mild and wet from June to September; the Highveld is dry, with mild days and cold nights.
Insurance
GOV.UK advises cover for medical treatment and evacuation, as there is no healthcare agreement between the UK and South Africa. Make sure your policy covers playing contact sport.
Getting there
There are direct flights from London Heathrow to Cape Town (about 12 hours) and to Johannesburg (about 11 hours). South Africa is 1 hour ahead of the UK in summer and 2 hours ahead in winter, so there is little jet lag.
Johannesburg to Cape Town is about 2 hours by air.
International flights are not included: you book your own and we plan the trip around them.
Entry: British passport holders
What you need to enter South Africa.
  • South Africa: no visa needed for tourism for up to 90 days. Your passport must be valid for at least 30 days after the day you leave, and have at least 2 blank pages.
  • Travelling on another passport? Check your own government's advice.
Checked against GOV.UK travel advice on 7 October 2026. Rules can change: always check before you travel. GOV.UK: South Africa
