From the Indian Ocean breaking behind the bowler's arm at Galle to Test cricket at altitude in Kandy

The Destination

Sri Lanka is my favourite country on earth. I've been coming here for twenty years and it never loses its magic. The cricket is year-round, the welcome is the warmest in the game, and Galle Fort is simply the most beautiful cricket ground in the world — the Indian Ocean breaking behind the bowler's arm while you watch from the ramparts of a 17th-century Dutch fort. Our local agents handle everything on the ground: quality accommodation, match tickets, private car transfers, wildlife safaris, and curated experiences across the island.

Always Available

Year-Round Cricket

Sri Lanka plays international cricket throughout the year, and the dual monsoon system means there is always a dry coast to visit. Unlike seasonal destinations, Sri Lanka is always available and always bookable. Whether you want to time your trip around a specific Test series or simply visit when it suits you, we can build your perfect Sri Lanka cricket journey.

Destination Guide

Introduction — by Ian Kerr

Sri Lanka is my favourite country on earth. I know that's a big statement, and I stand by every word of it. There is nowhere else in the world where cricket, culture, wildlife, and sheer natural beauty come together quite like this.

Galle is the reason most cricket lovers first come to Sri Lanka, and rightly so. Watching Test cricket from the ramparts of a 17th-century Dutch fort, the Indian Ocean crashing behind the bowler's arm, is the single greatest experience in world cricket. But Sri Lanka has so much more — the hill country around Kandy and Nuwara Eliya is breathtaking, the Cultural Triangle holds eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and the wildlife rivals anywhere in Africa for sheer density and accessibility.

Cricket here is year-round. There is no "season" in the way there is for Australia or the West Indies. The dual monsoon system means there is always a dry coast, always a match being played somewhere, always a reason to visit. This guide is built from two decades of travelling this extraordinary island, and it's updated constantly. It is the guide I wish I'd had on my first trip, and it will help you plan yours.

General Travel Notes

Entry Requirements

UK passport holders need both an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) and a separate e-arrival card to enter Sri Lanka. Both are applied for online before travel. The ETA grants the travel permit and the e-arrival card is an immigration processing form. Both are straightforward — we provide full step-by-step guidance with every booking.

Currency

Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). Major hotels and restaurants in tourist areas accept credit cards, but carrying rupees is essential for smaller establishments, tuk-tuks, and tips. ATMs are widely available. Sri Lanka remains outstanding value for money — fine dining, luxury hotels, and private driver transport all cost a fraction of equivalent experiences elsewhere.

Weather

Sri Lanka has a dual monsoon system, which is good news for visitors. The south and west coasts (including Galle and Colombo) are driest from November to April. The east coast and Cultural Triangle are driest from May to September. This means there is always a dry region to visit, and cricket is scheduled year-round. Temperatures sit between 27–32°C on the coast, dropping to 15–20°C in the hill country around Kandy and Nuwara Eliya. Pack light cotton for the coast and a warm layer for the hills.

Getting Around

Private car with driver is the standard and most comfortable way to travel. Distances are manageable — Colombo to Galle is around 2.5 hours via the southern expressway, Colombo to Kandy around 3 hours. All ground transfers are arranged by our local agents. The Kandy-to-Ella train is a must-do scenic journey that we build into longer itineraries — it is one of the most beautiful train rides in the world.

Flights

Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) near Colombo is the main gateway. Direct flights from London take approximately 10.5 hours. Several airlines operate direct or one-stop services from the UK.

Time Zone

Sri Lanka Standard Time is GMT+5.5. When it's midday in London (winter), it's 5:30pm in Sri Lanka. During British Summer Time, the difference is 4.5 hours ahead.

Electrical Plugs

Sri Lanka uses the same three-pin plug as the UK (Type G). No adapter needed for UK travellers.

Health

No mandatory vaccinations are required for entry from the UK. Mosquito repellent is essential, particularly in the evenings. Drink bottled water. Consult your GP or a travel health clinic at least 6 weeks before departure for the latest advice on recommended vaccinations and antimalarials.

Value

Sri Lanka is one of the best-value destinations in world cricket. Five-star hotels, private car transfers, excellent food, and top-quality experiences all come at a fraction of the cost you would pay in Australia, England, or the Caribbean. Your money goes remarkably far here.

Galle & South Coast — Galle International Cricket Stadium

Galle is why most cricket lovers first come to Sri Lanka, and it is easy to see why. The cricket ground sits inside a 17th-century Dutch fort — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — with the Indian Ocean breaking directly behind the bowler's arm at the City End. There is nothing else like it in world cricket.

Galle International Cricket Stadium

The most atmospheric cricket ground on earth. Set inside the walls of Galle Fort, a 17th-century Dutch fortification and UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Indian Ocean crashes against the fort walls behind the bowler's arm. The ramparts serve as the most iconic viewing gallery in cricket — sit on the old fort walls with the ocean below you and Test cricket playing out before you. Capacity is modest at around 10,000, which only adds to the intimacy. Sri Lanka have an outstanding home record here, and the pitch traditionally favours spin. Watching Rangana Herath bowl here was one of the great privileges of modern cricket.

Things to Do

  • Fort ramparts sunset walk — the most beautiful sunset walk in Sri Lanka, strolling the 400-year-old ramparts as the sun drops into the Indian Ocean
  • Whale watching from Mirissa — blue whales and sperm whales from November to April, one of the best whale watching experiences in the world
  • Yala National Park leopard safari — the highest density of leopards anywhere on earth, plus elephants, sloth bears, and crocodiles
  • South coast beaches — Unawatuna, Mirissa, Tangalle, and Hiriketiya offer golden sand, reef breaks, and palm-fringed coves
  • Galle Fort exploration — boutique shops, cafes, art galleries, and colonial architecture within the fort walls

Colombo & Negombo — R. Premadasa Stadium

Colombo is Sri Lanka's commercial capital and the most likely starting point for your journey. The city has undergone significant regeneration in recent years, with an emerging food scene, excellent hotels, and genuine cultural depth. Negombo, just north of the airport, offers beach convenience for first and last nights.

R. Premadasa Stadium

Capacity approximately 35,000. Originally known as the Khettarama Stadium, it was renamed after the former President and extensively renovated for the 2011 Cricket World Cup. Colombo's main international venue, hosting Tests, ODIs, and T20Is. A modern, well-facilitated ground in the heart of the city.

Things to Do

Kandy & Hill Country — Pallekele International Cricket Stadium

Kandy is Sri Lanka's cultural capital, set in the misty hills of the central highlands. The hill country stretching south to Nuwara Eliya and Ella is some of the most beautiful landscape in Asia — tea plantations cascading down mountainsides, cool mountain air, and colonial hill-station charm.

Pallekele International Cricket Stadium

Capacity approximately 35,000. Also known as the Muttiah Muralitharan Stadium, named after Sri Lanka's greatest cricketer and the highest wicket-taker in Test history. Set in the hills outside Kandy with mountain views surrounding the ground. Cricket at altitude — the air is cooler, the surroundings are green, and the atmosphere is distinctly different from the coastal grounds. A modern facility that has hosted Tests, ODIs, and T20Is since 2010.

Things to Do

  • Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic — UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sri Lanka's most sacred Buddhist temple, housing a relic of the Buddha's tooth
  • Tea plantation visits — the hill country around Nuwara Eliya produces some of the world's finest Ceylon tea. Tour a working plantation and factory

Cultural Triangle — Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium

The Cultural Triangle is Sri Lanka's ancient heartland — a region of extraordinary archaeological and cultural significance stretching between Kandy, Anuradhapura, and Polonnaruwa. This is where you find the highest concentration of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Asia.

Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium

A scenic ground in the heart of the Cultural Triangle, surrounded by rocky outcrops and lush vegetation. Primarily used for ODIs and T20Is, the setting is uniquely Sri Lankan — ancient Buddhist caves and temples visible from the stands.

Things to Do

  • Sigiriya Lion Rock — a 5th-century fortress perched atop a 200-metre granite column. The climb is unforgettable and the views from the summit are staggering
  • Dambulla Cave Temples — five caves containing over 150 Buddha statues and ceiling paintings dating back over 2,000 years. UNESCO World Heritage Site

Recommended Hotels

One of the most remarkable hotel designs in Asia — the building disappears into the landscape. Infinity pool, world-class dining, and an extraordinary sense of place.

Wildlife — Leopards, Elephants, Whales

For a small island, Sri Lanka's wildlife is extraordinary. The density and accessibility of large mammals, marine life, and birdlife rivals much of Africa, and wildlife experiences fit naturally into any cricket touring itinerary.

Yala National Park

The highest density of leopards anywhere on earth. An early-morning jeep safari in Yala gives you a genuine chance of seeing Sri Lanka's big cats in the wild, along with elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, and an astonishing variety of birdlife. Located on the south-east coast, easily combined with Galle tours.

Udawalawe National Park

One of the best places in Asia to see wild elephants. Herds of 50 or more are common, and sightings are virtually guaranteed. Less crowded than Yala and a wonderful half-day experience en route between the south coast and the hill country.

Bundala National Park

A paradise for birdwatchers. This wetland reserve on the south coast hosts flamingos, painted storks, and over 200 species of birds. A quieter, more intimate safari experience than Yala.

Whale Watching — Mirissa

Blue whales and sperm whales from November to April. Mirissa on the south coast is one of the best whale watching locations in the world — the continental shelf drops away close to shore, bringing the largest animals on earth within easy reach of morning boat trips.

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage

Near Kandy. Home to the largest herd of captive elephants in the world. Watch elephants bathing in the river — a popular stop on the way to or from the hill country. For wild elephant experiences, Udawalawe is the better choice.

Maldives Extension — The Perfect Ending

How It Works

We offer Maldives extensions from 4 to 7 nights, bookable as an add-on to any Sri Lanka itinerary. Fly from Colombo to Malé and transfer to your resort by speedboat or seaplane. Best conditions are November to April — calm seas, sunshine, and excellent underwater visibility.
