Cricket in India

Two ways to watch cricket in India: the IPL, the world’s biggest T20 league, from March to May, and the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, when Australia tour India for five Tests from January to March 2027, at Nagpur, Chennai, Guwahati, Ranchi and Ahmedabad.

India is where cricket is loudest: Eden Gardens under floodlights, the Wankhede by the Arabian Sea, and the biggest cricket ground in the world at Ahmedabad. Add the Golden Triangle, Rajasthan or Kerala either side of the cricket.

The grounds

Mumbai · Wankhede Stadium
Capacity about 33,000, and the home of Mumbai Indians. It hosted the 2011 World Cup final, when India lifted the trophy on home soil. The Arabian Sea breeze drifts across the ground at evening matches, and the atmosphere for an IPL game is one of the great cricket experiences.
Hotels we recommend, or similar, subject to availability: the Taj Mahal Palace, overlooking the Gateway of India; The Oberoi on Marine Drive; Trident Nariman Point, with Arabian Sea views and a rooftop pool; ITC Grand Central, well placed for the Wankhede and the city.
Kolkata · Eden Gardens
Capacity about 68,000: the oldest cricket ground in India, the second largest, and the cathedral of Indian cricket. A full Eden Gardens under floodlights is one of the most intense sporting experiences on earth.
Hotels we recommend, or similar, subject to availability: The Oberoi Grand on Chowringhee, a colonial-era grand hotel close to Eden Gardens; ITC Royal Bengal, modern luxury in New Town.
Delhi · Arun Jaitley Stadium
Capacity about 41,000. It hosts Tests, ODIs and T20Is, and its central location makes it one of the most accessible international grounds, steps from Old Delhi.
Hotels we recommend, or similar, subject to availability: The Imperial, an Art Deco heritage hotel on Janpath; the Taj Palace in the Diplomatic Enclave; ITC Maurya, home of the Bukhara restaurant.
Bengaluru · M. Chinnaswamy Stadium
Capacity about 40,000, and the home of Royal Challengers Bengaluru. A high-scoring ground with good sightlines from every stand, and the Bengaluru climate makes evening matches particularly pleasant.
Hotels we recommend, or similar, subject to availability: the Taj West End, set in 20 acres of tropical gardens; ITC Gardenia, contemporary and central.
Ahmedabad · Narendra Modi Stadium
Capacity about 132,000: the largest cricket stadium in the world, and host of the 2023 World Cup final. A modern colosseum that has to be seen to be believed. The 5th Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy is played here.
Chennai · MA Chidambaram Stadium
Capacity about 50,000, known as Chepauk, and the home of Chennai Super Kings and their famous fans. A passionate crowd and a pitch that helps the spinners make it one of India’s most distinctive grounds. The 2nd Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy is played here.
Hyderabad · Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium
Capacity about 55,000. A modern, well-equipped stadium on the edge of the city, and the home of Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Guwahati · Barsapara Cricket Stadium
The gateway to Northeast India, with the Brahmaputra, the tea gardens and Kaziranga within reach. The 3rd Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy is played here.
